Eric Augier erhåller Jörgen Engel Stipendium 2019 för etablerandet av en unik metod inom beroendefältet, och med vars hjälp han visat att neurotransmittor systemet GABA, specifikt i hjärnområdet amygdala, är av vikt för råttors val att dricka alkohol. Detta har han även visat hos personer med alkoholberoende. Sammantaget kan dessa translationella studier ge uppslag till helt nya behandlingar av alkoholberoende. In summary, our data provide strong support for a causal contribution of neuroadaptations affecting GABA signaling within the amygdala to the development of alcohol addiction. Furthermore, our findings suggest that pre-existing differences in GABAergic gene expression in the CeA may also influence susceptibility to developing alcohol addiction. Collectively, these experiments identify that impaired GABA clearance within the amygdala contributes to alcohol addiction, appears to translate between species, and may offer targets for new pharmacotherapies for treating this disorder.
